Thanks Asia Euro Malaysia Sdn Bhd for the special invitation to this exclusive preview and tasting of Trapiche Wines. Trapiche is located in Mendoza, Argentina at the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Founded in 1883, Trapiche is one of the oldest brands of wine produced in Argentina and is the country's largest exporter of premium wine brands. The event was held at the private lounge area of Vino Vino Bistro on the 2nd floor of the premise. We had the privilege to have Gaston Alfredo Caltabiano, the Corporate Business Manager of Grupo Penaflor S.A. who flew all the way from Argentina to introduce and tell us the story of Trapiche wines.

We had the opportunity to taste six of Trapiche's premium selections, starting with Trapiche Broquel Torrentes 2016 followed by Trapiche Oak Cask Chardonnay 2017, Trapiche Broquel Malbec 2016, Trapiche Broquel Bonarda 2016, Trapiche Medalla Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 and the star of the night the Trapiche Iscay 2012. To enhance our tasting experience, a variety of canapes, sashimi, beef steak and its signature Yakitori from the resident Japanese chef was served to complement the wines.
Torrontes is the white Argentinian varietal seldom seen here which is slightly off-dry with moderate acidity and has distinctive peach, apricot aromas on the nose. It is pretty easy drinking and an excellent choice to whet our palates before a full course meal. The other wine which struck me was the Bonarda. It is described as a stealthy, undiscovered wine with origins from Italy but is now the second most widely planted grape in Argentina after Malbec. The nose was amazingly fruity with hints of floral, spice and slight smoke. Read more about this varietal at WineFolly.
Eventually, the moment arrived when we got to taste the Iscay which was the crowd-favorite. Iscay simply means "two" and is representative of the two blend of grapes Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This deep purple colored wine has aromas of leather, black fruits, oak and vanilla. It has moderate acidity with silky, elegant tannins and some savory flavors. If you are having game meat, roast lamb or Wagyu beef, this label will be the perfect complement. The Iscay also comes in another blend of Syrah and Viognier but is not available during this tasting session. For more information about Trapiche's Iscay, click here.
